Train schedules 2026 – Čierny Hron Forest Railway

Welcome aboard the historic narrow-gauge railway of the Čierny Hron Valley. In 2026 you can combine three scenic routes and transfer between them according to the timetable. All regular rides start and finish at 

Čierny Balog – the heart of the railway.

  • Family-friendly: prams, wheelchairs, bicycles and dogs are welcome.

  • The 4th route (Šánske – Chvatimech) is currently out of regular service; only service/special trains run there with a special fare.

Green route to Vydrovo & the Forestry area (4 km)

In 2026, the gate of the Lesnícky skanzen remains closed based on the decision of Lesy Slovenskej republiky, š. p.. Trains still run in this valley, but without boarding/alighting at the stops along the way — enjoy it as one continuous, peaceful ride through nature.

Blue route to Dobroč (4 km) – “through the football field”

This is a true world rarity: the track runs right between the grandstand and the football pitch. At the end of the route you’ll enjoy a short break (about 10 minutes) near rest areas and playgrounds. From the main station you can transfer to the red route to Šánske or continue on the green route towards Vydrovo.

Red route to Šánske (5 km)

Ride into the calm beauty of the Hrončianska dolina with the charm of a classic steam train. After arriving at Šánske, the train takes a short break (about 15 minutes) before returning to Čierny Balog. Want something extra active? There’s a cycling route in the valley, and you can reserve rail bikes (cyklodreziny) at least a day in advance.

Runs daily from 28 Feb to 15 Sep 2026 (operation subject to a minimum of 6 full-fare tickets).

Steam trains (routes to Šánske & Dobroč)

Operating days (2026):

  • Every Saturday from 04 Apr to 20 Jun 2026

  • Plus 01 May and 08 May 2026

  • From 27 Jun to 29 Aug 2026: runs daily
